Overview

Gene therapy pioneer at Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan who led development of treatments for ADA-SCID and metachromatic leukodystrophy from academic discovery through regulatory approval and commercialization. Alessandro joined Ospedale San Raffaele in 1996 when gene therapy treatments showed potential but much remained to be done, motivated by patients who were dying with no available therapies for diseases that now have approved treatments. Alessandro's father was an HIV physician in the 1980s when no treatment existed, which motivated Alessandro to pursue science to find solutions; he later worked on HIV-derived lentiviral vectors to treat immunodeficiency.
