Balancing Innovation, Performance and Safety: The Evolution of Immersion Requirements

Author: Rick Mjar; Amy Sh, OCP Immersion Requirements Workstream Collection: 2024 OCP Global Summit - Cooling Environments & Immersion

Summary

This session presents the OCP Immersion Requirements workstream as the consolidating hub for immersion cooling guidance, occupying a unique position in the OCP community pipeline: it synthesizes outputs from early-pipeline groups (e.g., Immersion Challenges) and mid-pipeline technical workstreams (e.g., Fluids & Materials, Signal Integrity) into a holistic, systems-level best practices document. The central artifact is the OCP Immersion Requirements document, currently at Version 2.1, which serves simultaneously as the technical baseline for product design and the gateway to the OCP Marketplace via product recognition processes (OCP Accepted, OCP Inspired, and Open Compute Project Solution Provider tiers).

The session details a structured revision process for the V2.1 document update, driven by a "Voice of the Community" campaign that collected 83 unique engagements and 129 submissions from the broader OCP community including Immersion Requirements, Fluids & Materials, and Cooling Environments groups. From these inputs, 25 volunteers were organized into 6 focus groups addressing: Definitions (Section 2), Required Product Disclosures (Section 4.1), Minimum Requirements — Limits/Targets (Section 4.2), Equipment Safeguards (Section 5), Codes & Standards (Appendix), and Process & Accountability (committee leadership). The dual-publication strategy — a near-term release of high-consensus items followed by a longer-term release of data-dependent items — aims to deliver actionable guidance without waiting for full community consensus on contested parameters.

The market context motivates the urgency: the immersion cooling market was $0.4B in 2023 and is projected to reach $2.4B by 2031. The session frames the OCP Marketplace product recognition pathway as critical infrastructure for vendor credibility, with one complete and one in-progress submission each for specification and product recognition tracks as of late 2024.
