Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization
Overview
CDMOs provide both manufacturing and process development services to biopharmaceutical innovators; the industry has shifted from treating CDMOs as transactional vendors to strategic partners with shared development capabilities for titer improvement and process optimization. The term CDMO (Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization) has replaced CMO in common usage because CDMOs offer significant in-house process development resources that can help innovators increase titers, improve productivity, and scale up within clinical trial constraints. Innovator companies that refuse to allow CDMOs to contribute to molecule process development miss significant CDMO expertise and ultimately hurt their programs; a case was cited where exactly this failure hurt the innovator's clinical and commercial outcomes.
