Danaher Summit 2026: The Next Era of Bioprocessing — Conference Intelligence

Executive Briefing

Five things every executive must know from this summit:

  1. Cell and gene therapy manufacturing is at a commercial inflection point — and not in a good way. Up to 31% of patients referred for CAR-T therapy never receive it because manufacturing queues outlast disease progression. Kite Pharma's Amsterdam facility produces ~4 doses per operator per year (4,000 doses annually, ~1,000 headcount), a ratio that multiple speakers called economically unsustainable. Simultaneously, the frontier is advancing rapidly: Moderna's personalized cancer vaccine showed a 49% reduction in cancer recurrence/death with pembrolizumab at ASCO June 2026, manufacturing a custom 34-neoantigen construct per patient in six weeks. The industry must bridge "bench to billions" to "bench to one" without solving the economics of the current model first.

  2. Targeted delivery has finally unlocked nucleic acid drugs beyond the liver. 340+ nucleic acid candidates are in active clinical development in 2026. Dyne Therapeutics' FORCE platform (Fab fragment conjugated to oligonucleotide payload via TFR1 targeting) achieves 30–50x better muscle delivery versus naked PMO in primates and 75% whole-brain tau mRNA knockdown via IV versus 50% CSF knockdown with Biogen's intrathecal BIB080. Clinical data across all 7 DMD functional endpoints showed improvement from baseline — "unprecedented" by the CEO's description — and a BLA has been filed. Avidity Biosciences was acquired by Novartis for $12 billion in 2026, validating the commercial potential of antibody-oligonucleotide conjugates.

  3. China has structurally shifted from manufacturing base to innovation partner. China's license-out value reached $130 billion in 2025. The BMS–Henlius $15.2 billion collaboration announced in May 2026 — exchanging four immuno-oncology assets for four autoimmunity assets plus five joint discovery programs run at Henlius labs — represents a peer-level R&D partnership, not a service contract. WuXi XDC compressed ADC DNA-to-IND from the 24–30 month industry average to 13–15 months via an integrated four-component platform at a single site. Biologic outsourcing is ~18% in 2025 and forecast to reach 25% by 2030, while 118 biologics face patent expiry through 2035 with fewer than 10% having biosimilars in active development.

  4. Digital bioprocessing's decade-long underdelivery is a data infrastructure problem, not an AI problem. Most companies' 25+ years of historical process data is not AI-ready due to fragmented legacy systems and missing unique identifiers. Merck KGaA achieved a 50% reduction in CMC experimentation per molecule only after building IT/OT convergence, ontologies with external industry consortia, and then deploying digital twins. BMS's 7+ years of FAIR data enables Bayesian optimization using ~5 targeted experiments per new molecule — a decisive competitive gap. Module Type Package (MTP) already exists as a standard that compresses equipment integration from 9 months to 2 days, but broad adoption is stalled by lack of industry agreement on shared ontologies.

  5. Sustainability is now a procurement gate, not a reporting exercise. AstraZeneca has committed over $1 billion to low-carbon manufacturing transformation; 1 in 9 companies on the global science-based targets registry is an AZ supplier; over 80% of AZ's supply chain spend is with SBT-committed suppliers; and AZ has walked away from suppliers who refused to commit. The healthcare sector creates 5% of global carbon emissions — more than aviation. PSCI now has 85 member companies representing 70% of global pharma turnover ($1.2 trillion aggregate). The mass balance approach for bio-attributed single-use materials is regulatory-acceptable today and already used in consumer products for over a decade.
