Data Center Energy Consumption

Overview

Data center energy consumption refers to the aggregate electricity and water usage of data center facilities. As of 2023, US data centers consumed approximately 176 TWh of electricity annually — about 4.4% of total US electricity consumption — and contributed 3.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Cooling infrastructure accounts for approximately 50% of total data center energy draw, roughly equal to the server power draw itself. Data center cooling systems also collectively consume water equivalent to the annual needs of approximately 2,600 households.

The rapid expansion of AI training and inference workloads is driving a sharp projected increase: at current growth rates, US data center power consumption is projected to reach approximately 12% of total US electricity by 2028, nearly tripling its 2023 share in five years.

The economic impact of overheating is significant: downtime due to thermal failures costs approximately $10,000 per minute and up to $1 million per incident, making efficient cooling not merely an environmental consideration but a direct operational necessity.
