Overview

DeepSeek is a Chinese AI lab whose open-source model release had outsized industry impact: by publishing its distillation methodology, DeepSeek made it possible for smaller organizations to skip full data-lake acquisition and large-scale model training (pipeline stages 1 and 2 of the conventional AI product pipeline). Instead of building a training cluster to learn from raw data, a company can query a larger, more powerful model infinitely and train a smaller model to replicate its answers — dramatically reducing the compute and data requirements for AI market entry. Supermicro's Johnson Jia cited DeepSeek's open-source publication as a market-defining event that democratized AI entry, shifting the competitive question from "can you afford to train?" to "can you afford to deploy inference infrastructure?"
