Estel

Overview

Estel is a Belgian-headquartered startup and the only European manufacturer of pluggable optical transceivers as of April 2026. Founded approximately two years prior to the talk by Magnus Olson (former VP Hardware Engineering at Infinera/Nokia) after taking over the R&D team, Estel was born from a convergence of geopolitical pressure (demand for non-Chinese optical sourcing), datacenter/AI/HPC growth, and the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA, full application December 2027), which creates a regulatory barrier for Chinese vendors that a European-made product inherently avoids.

Estel's strategy deliberately avoids semiconductor components (no PICs, lasers, ASICs, drivers) and focuses on transceiver assembly, firmware, and electronics design with 100% automation to achieve cost parity with Asian alternatives. The company operates a three-location manufacturing footprint targeting both European and US sovereignty requirements.
