Formulated Coolant

Overview

Formulated coolant is one of two primary technology routes for water-based ICT liquid cooling. Its core component is a proprietary pharmaceutical-grade chemical formula that inhibits corrosion and microbial growth through active additives. Because each coolant vendor's formula is proprietary, formulated coolants from different manufacturers cannot be mixed — this limits interoperability across suppliers and creates vendor lock-in.

Formulated coolant has lower requirements for system cleanliness and can accommodate aluminum alloy components through formula adjustment, but it imposes rigorous non-metallic material compatibility testing requirements. It cannot be assessed in real-time through sensors; quality must be determined by periodic laboratory sampling, creating a reactive rather than proactive maintenance posture. TCT characterizes formulated coolant as an "additive control" system — one that replenishes inhibitors over time as they are consumed — in contrast to pure water coolant's "subtractive control" (removal-based) model.

TCT documented severe failure modes across multiple customer deployments: metal corrosion causing leakage, corrosion products causing fouling and blockage (aluminum oxidation, copper oxidation, metal oxide blockage), seal aging, and microbial loss of control (on-site pollution, drug resistance, microbial mud blockage). Real-world system cleaning after formulated coolant failure required one to two weeks per system — a significant operational burden. Water samples from three customer projects illustrate the visible degradation of failed formulated coolant systems.
