Fortum

Overview

Fortum is a Finnish energy company and major operator of district heating networks in the Nordic region. Fortum's district heating infrastructure in Helsinki is the basis for one of the most significant announced data center heat reuse projects: a partnership with Microsoft to capture waste heat from Azure data center operations and redirect it into Helsinki's municipal district heating grid. Fortum owns and operates the heat pump station that bridges the data center cooling loop (exit temperature 30–35°C for air-cooled, 40–45°C+ for liquid-cooled) up to district heating supply temperatures.
