GPU Power Shelf
Overview
The GPU power shelf is a centralized power conversion unit introduced with NVIDIA's GB200 and GB300 architectures, where power supply was moved out of individual servers into dedicated rack-level shelves. In prior GPU generations (Hopper), power supplies were embedded within each server. The architectural shift to rack-scale GPU IT systems (GB200/GB300 NVL72) consolidated power conversion outside the compute trays.
As of 2025, GPU power shelves span a range of capacities: the 33 kW V2 shelf (for GB300, 6+0 configuration, five 5.5 kW PSUs, single-phase 200–277 Vac input, 50 VDC output) and the 110 kW shelf (for next-generation racks, 6+0 configuration, six 18.3 kW PSUs, three-phase 415–480 Vac input, 50 VDC output). The 110 kW shelf achieves only 11% power density improvement over the 33 kW design but more than 100% increase in energy storage per watt due to the three-phase PFC converter enabling natural ripple cancellation and larger bulk capacitors. Future 800 VDC architectures use 100 kW shelves with 800 VDC output, sixteen of which populate a 1.2 MW power rack.
