IBET
Overview
Portuguese bioprocess research institute (Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica) pioneering perfusion-based and continuous integrated manufacturing processes for viral vectors and cell therapies since the early 1990s. IBET was founded in Portugal following MIT bioprocess engineering sabbaticals in the mid-1980s, built around the early recognition that animal cell culture would become the dominant platform for biological drug production. IBET published the first perfusion-based manufacturing process for retroviruses around 2002, developed in the early 1990s, enabling continuous production that addressed the fundamental 8-hour half-life limitation of retroviruses at 37°C under batch conditions.
