Overview

IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is a global professional standards organization covering electrical engineering, electronics, and computing. For optical networking, the IEEE 802.3 working group defines Ethernet physical layer standards. As of October 2025, IEEE 802.3dj — targeting 224 Gbps per lane signaling — was at Draft 2.0, progressing on 2xDR4, DR8, and FR4 reach variants, driving the industry ecosystem toward standardized 1.6T and 3.2T Ethernet transceiver specifications.
