Immersion TCO
Overview
Immersion TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) modeling quantifies the full lifecycle costs and benefits of immersion cooling versus air-cooled data center deployments. A rigorous TCO model integrates capital expenditures (CAPEX: tanks, CDUs, facility modifications, IT hardware), operational expenditures (OPEX: power, cooling energy, maintenance, fluid replacement), and efficiency metrics (PUE, DUE, ERF) to produce a cost-per-compute-unit comparison between cooling architectures.
The OCP Immersion TCO Workstream, led by Allison Bowen (Alitex) and Eddie Reidman (Intel), was launched in early 2023 to create an open-source, vendor-neutral Excel-based TCO model. The model addresses a significant gap: without standardized, credible cost models, data center operators cannot make evidence-based investment decisions comparing immersion cooling to air-cooled baselines. Early model estimates suggest immersion CAPEX is 17–23% lower than air-cooled (from eliminating CRAC units, chillers, and air handlers) and OPEX is 8–12% lower.
