Kioxia

Overview

Kioxia is a NAND flash and SSD manufacturer that has built projects demonstrating the benefits of Flexible Data Placement (FDP). Represented at the 2025 OCP Global Summit by Senior Fellow Rory Bolt, Kioxia developed the open-source U-Frog RocksDB plugin — which uses io_uring to bypass the file system and push drive write amplification factor (WAF) to essentially 1.0 — and a no-code experiment that mapped temp FS and swap space to separate namespaces, cutting Linux-kernel-build WAF from roughly 2.2 to roughly 1.0 with about 10 minutes of configuration.
