Life Cycle Assessment
Overview
ISO-standard methodology calculating product environmental footprint from cradle to end of life across multiple impact categories; increasingly applied in biopharma with AI-enhanced tools and new PAS 2090 standard for drug products. Life cycle assessment is an ISO-standard methodology calculating a product's environmental footprint from cradle (resource extraction and transformation) through transportation, customer use, and end of life, identifying hotspots across multiple impact categories including carbon, water, resource use, and biodiversity. PAS 2090 was recently published as product category rules for life cycle assessment of drug products including biologics, beginning to standardize a previously inconsistent landscape for pharmaceutical LCA carbon footprinting.
