Liquid-Cooled I/O
Overview
Liquid-cooled I/O refers to front-panel or mid-board optical transceiver cage assemblies with integrated liquid cooling channels, designed to remove the heat generated by high-speed optical transceivers directly at the port rather than relying on airflow. Each 1.6T (1.6 Terabit) optical transceiver consumes approximately 40 watts; in a large AI cluster with thousands of such ports, the aggregate thermal load exceeds what air cooling can manage within standard rack thermal budgets.
TE Connectivity identifies itself as first-to-market with a production liquid-cooled I/O connector solution. The technology is complementary to the liquid-cooled bus bar and direct-to-chip cooling approaches, completing a full liquid thermal chain from chip to power distribution to I/O. As AI clusters scale optical port density (driven by 400G, 800G, and 1.6T interconnects), liquid-cooled I/O moves from an optimization to a necessity.
