MGX Rack Form Factor

Overview

MGX is NVIDIA's modular rack architecture standard that defines slot layouts (B-bay and C-bay) for organizing rack-level components including IO modules, power supplies, SSD drives, SCM drives, and rack management controllers. The B-bay handles IO and the C-bay handles power, storage, and management — a layout that has been consistent across MGX implementations from the original GH200 system through the current GB200 platform.

The MGX form factor enables ODMs to build interoperable rack-level systems on NVIDIA's reference design while maintaining flexibility in component selection for the non-compute bays. The 1U MGX slot is the standard form factor for rack management controllers such as QCT's RM61X.

QCT claims to have shipped the first MGX rack-scale solution in the world in 2023 — an NVL32 POC using the GH200 Grace Hopper platform — marking a key early commercial milestone in the MGX ecosystem.
