Mass Balance Approach
Overview
Supply chain certification methodology substituting bio-based, bio-circular, or circular feedstocks at the cracker step to produce physically identical end materials with chain-of-custody credit — accepted by regulators and adopted in consumer products for over a decade. The mass balance approach incorporates bio-based, bio-circular, or circular feedstocks at the chemical cracker step to produce physically identical end materials, using a chain-of-custody certification to pass credit for sustainable feedstocks through the supply chain. Single-use materials produced using the mass balance approach are acceptable to regulators because the physical product is unchanged; materials are termed 'bio-attributed' rather than 'bio-based' to accurately reflect the chain-of-custody credit mechanism.
