NVMe Data Areas
Overview
NVMe Data Areas are the telemetry data organization structure — Data Areas 1 through 4 — that partition SSD debug information by human-readability, size, and urgency within the OCP Data Center NVMe SSD specification. Data Areas 1 through 3 together support a maximum of 32MB total, which is not enough for all telemetry cases; Data Area 4 was introduced in NVMe 2.0 (referenced by OCP 2.5) to allow much larger sizes, but accessing it requires the ETDAS bit set in NVMe commands. Vendors map these areas to debug roles by policy: Micron, for example, allocates DA1 at 32KB for fleet monitoring of non-failing drives, DA2 at 20–30MB for failure analysis (statistics and event FIFOs), DA3 near zero for legacy systems only, and DA4 up to less than 1GB for maximal debug. A practical constraint on out-of-band access: transferring a 32MB telemetry file over SMBus sideband can take hundreds to thousands of seconds, making sideband an impractical primary path for drives not enumerated as NVMe devices.
