Navigating Immersion Challenges: Addressing Risks and Warranty Guidelines in Immersion Cooling

Summary

This joint presentation covers two related OCP workstreams: the Immersion Challenges (Hurdles) Workstream led by Raul Alvarez and David T, and the Hardware Warranty Guidelines Workstream led by Rich Lappenbusch and Michael Cordle. The overarching theme is that immersion cooling adoption is bottlenecked not by engineering but by business, legal, and operational framework gaps — and OCP is addressing these systematically.

The Immersion Challenges Workstream functions as an incubator: it surveys the industry for pain points, achieves critical mass of interest and representation, then spins off dedicated workstreams. Active challenge areas include: monitoring and leakage detection (dielectric fluids cannot be detected by conventional electrical leakage sensors); fluid lifecycle modeling (new workstream being launched with fluid manufacturers); open-source modular data center design for immersion (currently no open-source option exists); market feedback survey (in preparation with OCP marketing); and hardware compatibility.

The Warranty Guidelines Workstream addresses the discovery that the immersion industry lacks consistent terminology in warranty documents — which creates confusion, litigation risk, and customer adoption barriers. Unlike air-cooled systems where warranty vocabulary coalesced over decades, immersion must achieve terminology consensus rapidly. The ten identified warranty challenges include lack of data, lack of contextual awareness, lawsuits/litigation, operational variability, material/hardware variability, fluid variability, logistical complexity, non-standard usage, lack of domain accountability, and increased claims. The primary intervention: a consensus glossary (9-level taxonomy) that lawyers can use as reference when drafting immersion warranties.

A key insight from Rich Lappenbusch: "Many HW warranties offered today for traditional air-cooling of ITE are voided once the HW is immersed" — establishing that immersing air-cooled servers immediately invalidates existing warranty coverage, making new immersion-specific warranties essential for legal clarity.
