OCP NVMe SSD Telemetry

Overview

OCP NVMe SSD Telemetry is the standardized telemetry framework defined in the OCP Data Center NVMe SSD specification that enables human-readable SSD debug logs via open-source nvme-cli tooling. It divides telemetry into two regions: a decodable region (Data Area 1 and Data Area 2) that becomes human-readable with industry-standard tools, and a non-decodable proprietary region (Data Area 3 and Data Area 4). The standard evolved through four specification versions from 2020 to 2024, progressively strengthening latency requirements, data-area size mandates, and the requirement that the contents of DA1 and DA2 be sufficient for debug. The framework's central value is a single, unified telemetry tool chain: because SSD vendors and customers validate the same tools, development time is reduced, retraining overhead is eliminated, and external failure signatures align with internal debug signatures.
