Overview

OpenAI is a frontier AI research lab and company that develops large language models (GPT series), the ChatGPT consumer product, and the Codex agentic coding platform. Co-founded by Andrej Karpathy among others, OpenAI's training decisions — what data enters the pre-training set, which domains receive reinforcement learning investment — directly shape the "jagged" capability profile of frontier models. Karpathy describes being "slightly at the mercy of whatever the labs are doing, whatever they happen to put into the mix."
