Optimized Provisioning

Overview

Optimized Provisioning is a drive-managed approach to HDD regeneration — Solution 3 of the three CMR depopulation proposals Seagate presented at OCP Global Summit 2025. When a head goes bad or is going bad, the drive automatically redirects LBA accesses from the failing head to a good head; the host is notified but takes no action, making the process fully transparent to the host. Based on the thin-provisioning concept, its goal is to move an aging drive back into the flat portion of the bathtub reliability curve, extending useful life from about 4 years to potentially 6-7 years.

The approach works for both RAID and erasure-coded systems but requires available free space on the drive and TRIM commands from the host. Its tradeoff is added drive-side complexity: by introducing an SSD-like LBA mapping table, the drive "will start to look more like an SSD," with increased fragmentation and garbage collection over time. Among the three CMR solutions it adds the most drive-side complexity but is the only one fully transparent to the host; Seagate described it as the method it has been actively researching.
