Process Mass Intensity
Overview
Quantitative resource efficiency metric for pharmaceutical processes showing mass of all inputs per unit product; for biotherapeutics it highlights water as the dominant problem, diverging from carbon footprint analysis which highlights electricity and consumables. For biotherapeutics such as antibodies or viral vectors, process mass intensity analysis identifies water as the dominant environmental problem, pointing to process intensification and continuous processing as the primary mitigation strategies. Process mass intensity and carbon footprint metrics point to fundamentally different sustainability priorities for biotherapeutics: PMI highlights water consumption and process intensification, while carbon footprint analysis highlights electricity usage, consumables, HVAC design, and renewable energy sources.
