Pure Water Coolant
Overview
Pure water coolant is one of two primary technology routes for water-based ICT liquid cooling systems. Its core component is the medium purification module (MPM) — a replaceable ion-exchange resin cartridge that maintains water quality by absorbing ionic compounds and keeping conductivity low. Unlike formulated coolant, which relies on proprietary chemical additives from each vendor, pure water coolant uses a subtractive control model: contaminants are removed rather than counteracted by additives.
A key operational advantage is interoperability: coolants and MPMs from different manufacturers can be mixed freely, whereas each vendor's formulated coolant formula is proprietary and incompatible with others. Pure water coolant also enables direct real-time quality monitoring through conductivity (the primary indicator), pH, and dissolved oxygen sensors — formulated coolant cannot be assessed in real-time and requires periodic laboratory sampling instead. MPM replacement is triggered by a conductivity alarm, making maintenance event-driven rather than schedule-based.
Pure water coolant imposes stricter material compatibility constraints than formulated coolant: it is unsuitable for carbon steel, galvanized steel, and aluminum alloy due to corrosion tendencies, but is highly compatible with non-metallic materials such as EPDM, NBR, and PTFE. System cleanliness requirements are higher — inorganic salts or oils can rapidly degrade the MPM, and residual organic matter must be converted to ionic form by microbial activity before the purification module can absorb it.
TCT characterizes pure water coolant as a "subtractive control" system (in contrast to formulated coolant's "additive control") and concludes it is the best choice for MLCP (Modular Liquid Cooling Platform) and all ICT liquid cooling systems. A five-year China verification project (Core Switch Server Liquid Cooling System, Guizhou Province, July 2018 – June 2023) confirmed viability at scale: conductivity 6.71 µS/cm, pH 6.7, turbidity 0.0 NTU, unmanned operation, and only one MPM replacement required across the full period.
