Rack-Scale AI Infrastructure

Overview

Rack-scale AI infrastructure describes the industry shift from procuring and deploying individual servers (L10) as the primary unit to deploying fully integrated, pre-validated rack systems (L11) and multi-rack clusters (L12) as turnkey solutions. This shift is driven by the complexity of modern AI GPU configurations: power distribution, high-speed NVLink or NVSwitch fabrics, liquid cooling, CDU integration, and management software all require tight integration and validation that most customers cannot perform themselves.

The migration path is L10 → L11 → L12. At L10, customers receive individual servers. At L11, manufacturers ship fully pre-integrated racks with power, cooling, and networking tested before delivery. At L12, the manufacturer provides full multi-rack cluster deployment including CDU, piping, inter-rack networking, simulation of power and liquid connectivity, and onsite integration. Customers deploying AI clusters commonly lack in-house integration expertise ("they don't know how to put together the puzzle"), making turnkey deployment services a critical capability for ODMs and ODMs-turned-infrastructure-integrators.
