Safe Handling Guidelines for Immersion Fluids

Summary
This presentation provides a progress update on the OCP Safe Handling Guidelines for Immersion Fluids workstream. Driven by the recognition that many data center operators and technicians are unfamiliar with the chemistry and hazard profiles of dielectric immersion fluids, the workstream has developed a practical whitepaper intended to bridge the gap between the complex regulatory language in SDS (Safety Data Sheet) documents and actionable operational guidance. The document covers all major current immersion fluid classes — synthetic hydrocarbons, esters, fluorochemical fluids, and formulated blends — for both single-phase and two-phase applications.
A key insight is that SDS documents cover all foreseeable uses of a product, many of which are not relevant to immersion cooling. For example, mist generation warnings relevant to metalworking applications do not apply to sealed immersion tanks. The whitepaper translates fluid vendor product stewardship guides into digestible bullet-point checklists covering PPE (personal protective equipment) requirements, safe handling, product storage, disposal, spill procedures, and cleaning procedures. The document also addresses facility-level SPCC (Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure) planning. At the time of presentation, the whitepaper was in subcommittee review with publication targeted for early 2025.
Future workstream activities include developing guidance for handling contaminated or decomposed fluids (which may have a different hazard class than fresh fluid), in-depth cleaning procedures (addressed in a separate OCP workstream), and engagement with industry standards bodies toward developing immersion-specific codes and standards — none of which existed at the time of this presentation.
