Smart Manufacturing
Overview
Smart manufacturing, in the context of AI server production, refers to assembly systems that combine digital simulation with robotic arms on the production floor. The robots are calibrated against virtual models of the product and self-adjust during assembly to compensate for dimensional variance in components — reducing the manual skill requirement and eliminating a major source of human error. This approach is particularly valuable when scaling production to geographies where the specialized labor pool differs from the engineering center of expertise.
Pegatron deployed smart manufacturing for its GB300 server assembly line. Using simulation-synchronized robotic arms that micro-adjust for dimensional variance, the yield rate improved from 57% to over 90% — a 33-percentage-point improvement that directly increases throughput and reduces scrap and rework. The same capability is being leveraged to enable manufacturing scale-out to Pegatron's Mexico and Texas facilities, where the smart system compensates for the different skilled labor availability compared to Taiwan.
