UCL
Overview
University College London, a leading UK research university with bioprocessing education programs including the 20-year industry-facing MBI program. UCL has run the MBI industry-directed bioprocessing program for over 20 years, offering a more flexible and industry-relevant track that has proved commercially sustainable. UCL is open to industry dialogue on curriculum direction but faces structural barriers including course approval processes and availability of expert faculty when attempting to pivot rapidly to new subject areas. (Segment 4 (15:00-20:00)) UCL's Department of Biochemical Engineering, led by Suzanne Farid, has brought together research forums on bioprocessing sustainability alongside digitalization and manufacturing innovation over many years. UCL conducted sustainability benchmarking with the Bio Industry Association to identify where to focus sustainability efforts for biotherapeutics, producing findings on differing priorities under process mass intensity versus carbon footprint metrics.
