AI Data Center Power Density
Overview
AI data center power density refers to the escalating power requirements driven by successive generations of AI accelerators. Traditional data center racks ran at 20–30 kW; next-generation AI racks are forecast to exceed 1 MW within a few years. The leading AI accelerators as of 2025 — Nvidia Blackwell and AMD MI350 — already exceed 1,000 watts per chip TDP, fundamentally changing data center design requirements for power delivery, cooling, and facility infrastructure.
This escalation makes HVDC power distribution and advanced liquid cooling (cold plate, immersion) essential for next-generation AI rack deployments, replacing traditional AC power distribution and air cooling that were adequate for prior generations. Cooling technology is evolving in parallel: traditional heatsink solutions grew 20% per two-year cycle; cold plate and immersion cooling capacity now doubles every two years; IC-package-integrated cooling solutions are projected to grow 3x per two years.
