Battery Energy Storage Systems

Overview

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are electrochemical storage installations that can absorb excess grid power and discharge stored energy on demand, enabling grid balancing and uninterruptible power applications. In data center contexts, BESS is increasingly evaluated as a replacement for or complement to diesel generator backup power, as part of broader sustainability and clean-energy mandates.

AI training workloads present a unique challenge for BESS and microgrid integration: training jobs produce large, rapid power fluctuations as GPUs cycle between compute phases. These fluctuations are fast relative to the response time of mechanical systems (chillers, generators) but can be smoothed by BESS acting as a buffer between the AI compute load and the grid or generator.

Google operates an operational microgrid test bed that evaluates real ML workloads alongside BESS to understand these interactions. A key goal is standardizing BESS and microgrid APIs across the industry so that data center operators, utility partners, and equipment vendors can interoperate without proprietary integration work.
