DC Telemetry
Overview
DC Telemetry (Data Center Telemetry) refers to the collection of real-time operational data from data center mechanical and electrical infrastructure — including power distribution equipment, cooling systems (chillers, CDUs), generators, and UPS systems. In the context of AI workloads, DC telemetry poses a unique challenge: AI training jobs produce large, rapid power fluctuations, but the mechanical systems that must respond to these fluctuations (generators, chillers) react on timescales of seconds to minutes, creating a control loop mismatch.
Google and several hyperscalers are co-developing standardized DC telemetry guidelines to address this mismatch. Key objectives include:
- Secure, authenticated telemetry streams from mechanical systems
- Sufficiently low latency to detect and respond to AI-driven power transients
- Standardized data models that allow cross-vendor, cross-facility analysis
- Integration with BESS and microgrid control systems for proactive load management
Standardized DC telemetry is also a prerequisite for the Fungible Data Center vision: operators cannot make rapid deployment decisions across different accelerator types without reliable, real-time visibility into facility power and cooling headroom.
