E2 Form Factor
Overview
The E2 form factor is a newly ratified EDSFF high-capacity SSD form factor, standardized in 2025 as SFF-1042. It provides 64 or more NAND placements, an EDSFF connector supporting 80 watts, and a single PCB with a thermally optimized enclosure. E2 grew out of a 2024 call to action for a unified high-capacity form factor at 128 terabytes and above to avoid industry fragmentation, and it leverages the best attributes of E1 and E3. It was designed to be oversized in X, Y, and Z so it can tolerate beyond a BGA-178 package and accommodate future 4-terabit dies and 32-to-64 die stacks. E2 enables device capacity scaling to one petabyte and beyond, dense chassis of up to 40 drives, cooling at low airflow, and power-based performance scaling. It is positioned as complementary to E1.S: E2 for high capacity and E1.S for high density and compute.
