Heterogeneous Hardware

Overview

Heterogeneous hardware refers to data center architectures that aggregate CPUs, GPUs, and XPUs from multiple vendors, tied together at data-center scale via a unified fabric network. Intel frames hardware diversity not as an optional feature but as the foundational requirement for agentic AI workloads, where complex multi-agent pipelines—spanning context generation, reasoning models, LLM prefill/decode, tool calls, and security/guardrails—each have distinct silicon requirements for cost, latency, and power optimization.

Intel's scalable heterogeneous systems architecture is structured in three interdependent layers: (1) heterogeneous hardware (multi-architecture, multi-vendor silicon); (2) system infrastructure (enterprise-friendly server form factors and open Ethernet-based scale-out networking); and (3) an open AI software stack (programmability, orchestration, and multi-framework/model APIs). The open software layer is the key enabler that allows workloads to move across silicon types without re-engineering.
