Modular Data Center Prefabrication
Overview
Modular data center prefabrication refers to the approach of assembling integrated power, cooling, and IT modules off-site in a factory setting, then delivering them pre-commissioned and ready to install. The key distinctions from traditional on-site builds are:
- Scalability without building modification: Instead of jackhammering concrete or rerouting electrical conduit as power needs grow, operators add another skid or power pod outside the existing building footprint.
- Pre-commissioning: Modules arrive pre-optimized and factory-tested; only final on-site commissioning and site acceptance testing remain, reducing on-site skilled labor requirements.
- Modular capacity increments: Cooling can be scaled in defined increments (e.g., 600 kW, 1,200 kW, 1,800 kW) by adding modules; the same modular logic applies to power.
Flex presented this approach at OCP Global Summit 2025, arguing that an 18-month average data center deployment timeline can be cut by approximately one-third through pre-fabrication and pre-commissioning of integrated power-compute-cooling modules.
