NVMe CLI
Overview
NVMe CLI is the open-source command-line tooling ecosystem for NVMe storage devices, with the OCP NVMe CLI representing the OCP-specific extension layer that surfaces OCP-defined log pages, telemetry commands, and device management operations in a standardized, cross-vendor interface. Alongside OCP SSD qualification tests, NVMe CLI has been repeatedly cited within the OCP community as a concrete deliverable that adds direct, measurable value to the industry — moving OCP's work beyond specification documents into executable tooling that operators can deploy in their fleets today.
The tooling matters because NVMe's command set is rich but its vendor-specific extensions are opaque without tooling support. OCP NVMe CLI provides a consistent interface to OCP log pages (latency monitoring, telemetry, SMART attributes) across drive vendors, enabling fleet operators to script uniform health checks, telemetry collection, and diagnostic workflows without writing vendor-specific parsers. The SSD qualification tests further operationalize OCP specs by giving both drive vendors and hyperscale purchasers a shared test suite for validating compliance.
At the 2025 OCP Global Summit — Storage, Microsoft advanced a proposal to extend the role of NVMe CLI further: standardizing fault detection and automated repair actions as a named extension to the tool, making self-healing workflows portable across OCP-compliant fleets. This proposal connects directly to Microsoft's broader self-healing pipeline (which layers ML-based failure prediction over expert-rule thresholds) and reflects a view that the value chain from detection through remediation should be as open and standardized as the telemetry collection that feeds it. The framing is explicitly one of industry-level standardization rather than internal tooling, suggesting Microsoft intends to contribute this extension to the OCP open-source ecosystem.
