SSD Firmware Left-Shifting

Overview

SSD firmware left-shifting is the practice of moving firmware qualification test execution to the SSD vendor's lab before firmware release, so vendors can find and fix defects before the hyperscaler's regression cycle begins. By distributing a shared, open-source test codebase, Meta, its ODMs, and SSD vendors can reproduce firmware issues on their own lab systems, reducing churn from multi-platform integration problems and low-failure-rate bugs that are otherwise hard to reproduce. Vendors run Meta's test suite on candidate firmware before sending it for qualification, so issues are caught before Meta dedicates its own regression resources. At Meta, left-shifting (enabled by the open-source OCP Diag AutoVal test cases) cut the firmware regression cycle from 8 weeks to 6 weeks, a 25% reduction.
