Overview

Yuliya Tarnikova is an engineer at Google who works on multi-tenant SSD Quality of Service. At OCP Global Summit 2025 she co-presented "Navigating Shared Storage: Mitigating Performance Challenges with SSD Quality of Service" with Dan Helmick of Samsung, articulating the hyperscaler motivation and the requirements that drive the NVMe TP4176 standard.

Tarnikova set out Google's four fundamental requirements for multi-tenant SSD QoS: the ability to advertise and deliver consistent performance, robust performance isolation to guarantee customer SLAs even with noisy neighbors, fair resource sharing of NAND and PCIe bandwidth, and VM fungibility across SSD generations. She identified gaps in the current TP4176 proposal — it covers only reads and writes (not deallocates, where a large deallocate can monopolize SSD resources and spike latency for co-tenants), does not handle bursty workloads well, and lacks credit sharing across multiple virtual functions needed for SPDK. She also described the single-tenant priority-inversion problem, in which a user's own background analytics IO blocks its latency-sensitive user-facing reads, making the tenant its own noisy neighbor, and motivated true end-to-end IO prioritization.
