Precision Immersion Cooling
Overview
Precision immersion cooling (as implemented by Iceotope) circulates a small amount of environmentally safe mineral oil within individual IT enclosures — servers, network devices, storage systems, power supplies — maintaining all components at equal temperature and achieving 100% thermal efficiency across the full IT stack. Unlike full-tank immersion, which requires submersion of all hardware in a single large tank, precision immersion retains standard rack-based architecture.
Full-tank immersion was pursued by multiple well-funded companies but is regarded as non-viable at scale. Precision immersion captures the single meaningful benefit of full-tank (100% thermal efficiency) while discarding its impracticalities. Rack-level capacity comparison (Iceotope data, 2025): air cooling ~10 kW usable compute, rear door HX ~28 kW, cold plate + RDHX hybrid ~120 kW, Iceotope standalone ~280 kW, Iceotope + cold plate ~950+ kW.
Key operational benefits observed in production deployments: elimination of fans reduces particulate circulation (improving drive reliability), vibration elimination reduces mechanical drive failure by 30% (Iceotope/Meta JBOD deployment over 5 years ago), and customers have reported zero performance degradation during complete HVAC failures — an impossible outcome with air cooling. GPU overclocking is also enabled by the uniform thermal environment.
