Reinforcement Learning from AI Feedback
Overview
Reinforcement Learning from AI Feedback (RLAIF) is a post-training alignment technique that uses an AI model (rather than human raters) as the reward signal to guide a language model's self-improvement. Unlike RLHF (Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback), RLAIF scales without requiring large human annotation pools, making it practical for organizations that cannot maintain a large labeling workforce.
In Foxconn's FoxBrain post-training pipeline, RLAIF is labeled "RL Self-Evol" — the model iteratively diagnoses its own weaknesses across specific task categories, routes training to targeted RL or SFT stages until performance thresholds are met, then repeats. This adaptive loop is more responsive than fixed multi-stage pipelines: rather than applying a predetermined sequence (as in NVIDIA Nemotron's distillation → SFT → RL-reasoning → RL-alignment stages or DeepSeek-R1's RL + SFT on 600k/800k samples), Foxconn's approach identifies the specific capability gap first and then selects the appropriate training intervention.
Both NVIDIA Nemotron and DeepSeek-R1 pipelines — referenced by Foxconn at OCP 2025 — use RL stages as the final alignment step; FoxBrain extends this by making the entire post-training loop diagnostic and adaptive.
