SONiC Foundation

Overview

The SONiC Foundation operates under the Linux Foundation and stewards the SONiC open-source network operating system. SONiC was originally developed by Microsoft and open-sourced via GitHub, with Google among its earliest and most prolific contributors. The Foundation coordinates releases, community roadmaps, and ecosystem integrations across dozens of hardware vendors and hyperscalers.

At OCP Global Summit 2025, the SONiC Foundation co-located a workshop alongside the OCP event, with Google hosting an additional overflow workshop the following Friday — reflecting SONiC's central role in open data center networking.
