Open Source Firmware Foundation

Overview

The Open Source Firmware Foundation (OSFF) is an independent non-profit umbrella organization co-founded by 9elements and Siemens approximately 3–4 years before 2025, providing governance, funding, and standardization coordination for open-source firmware projects. Its creation was motivated by the need to move beyond ad-hoc community contributions and establish a formal structure for funding, project management, and standards coordination across the open-source firmware ecosystem. OSFF membership spans a broad range of organizations including AMD, MiTAC, Binarly, System76, 9elements, Tlian, Mullvad, 3mdeb, Pengutronix, Supermicro, Purism, Nitrokey, Google, 0xide, Siemens, secunet, Protectli, Framework, and others. OSFF runs active workstreams on EuCRA (EU Cyber Resilience Act) compliance for firmware and co-collaborates with OCP OPF on the openSFI specification.
