openSFI

Overview

openSFI (Open-Source Silicon Firmware Interface) is an OCP Open Platform Firmware (OPF) specification that inserts a Vendor Adapter Layer (VAL) abstraction between silicon initialization and host firmware, enabling a single coreboot or UEFI codebase to run across AMD and Intel SoCs without modification. The motivation is to eliminate the firmware fragmentation that forces platform integrators to maintain separate teams and codebases per silicon vendor — ranked the #1 problem statement by OPF community poll in December 2024. The spec roadmap iterates from v0.3 through v0.5, v0.8, and ultimately v1.0. MiTAC committed engineering resources to build the proof-of-concept VAL implementation starting in 2026, in deep partnership with AMD, 9elements, AMI, HPE, Google, Microsoft, and other OPF members. The OCP OPF team and MiTAC held a face-to-face planning meeting in March 2025 before the EMEA summit.
