Raj Kapoor
Overview
Raj Kapoor is a Fellow and Chief Firmware Architect at AMD, and serves as the OCP representative for the Open Platform Firmware (OPF) project. His primary technical focus is eliminating host firmware fragmentation across silicon platforms. Kapoor explains that because Intel and AMD each require silicon-specific initialization APIs, platform integrators such as MiTAC, Google, and Microsoft must maintain separate firmware teams per silicon vendor — a burden he ranked the #1 problem statement in the industry following a December 2024 OPF community poll covering platform integrators, silicon vendors, and independent firmware vendors. He is driving the openSFI specification (Open Silicon Firmware Interface) to insert a Vendor Adapter Layer (VAL) between silicon initialization and host firmware, enabling a single coreboot or UEFI codebase to span AMD and Intel SoCs. He praised MiTAC for going beyond endorsement to committing engineering resources to build the PoC VAL.
